Reflection Blog #3

The 21st Century learners were bored, could not concentrate, some were not going to class, and others were not reading the assigned readings for their classes. The students felt like it had nothing to do with their lives. Today’s class sizes of 200 people, does not allow you to know each other on a name to name basis and most teachers do not know your name. They hate being talked at. Learners today hate lectures and tune them out. Today’s learners want to know what they need to know for test purposes just so they can pass the class and move on. I consider myself as a 21st century learner. I want to know what I need to know to make the grades. I take online classes because I work full time and cannot attend class on campus. This probably worsens my thoughts about what to learn just what I need to know to pass the class. I easily get sidetracked and bored in class if the instructor is not keeping my attention. I communicate with my class mates, coworkers, and keep track of real time inventory at my manufacturing plants in Honduras and El Salvador through today’s technology and media. Technology allows us to strengthen our communication and abilities to do so many things every day.

Today’s teachers should find new ways to present information in classrooms so students will want to learn and pay attention to what they are being taught. Educators should take into consideration that each student is different and everyone learns in their own way. Through surveys it is known that students prefer to deal with questions and not just answers. Students prefer group projects and dealing with real life situations. Students today want to be able to share their opinions and be heard. Educators should incorporate different teaching strategies to keep the students engaged and not lecturing every class.

Our team project will cater to the students who want to further their education or students who want to start their work career right out of high school. Students will be using hands-on with computers and today’s technology to learn how to create their resumes and cover letters. Students will be able to work in group projects to collaborate how they should start to create these documents. The students will also be required to give feedback throughout the learning experience and be able to present a finished document to prove they have mastered the ability to create a resume and cover letter.
